Monaghan Town
Monaghan is the county town and largest town in County Monaghan, in the Republic of Ireland. It is in the province of Ulster, but not in Northern Ireland, and sits fifteen kilometres south of the border on the N2 between Dublin and Derry. The 2022 census counted 7,894 people living in it.
It is a plantation town on an older Gaelic site, laid out as four linked squares rather than one main street, and it grew on the linen trade. Partition in 1921 cut the trade and the transport that ran north into Ulster, and the town spent most of the last century at the end of a road rather than in the middle of one. That has changed again since the 1990s.
What brings most people here now is the county museum, which is free and better than the town's size would suggest, and Rossmore Forest Park just south west of the town. Both are covered below.
